-
- Subtitled efforts from AnimEigo include:
-
- BUBBLEGUM CRISIS (see above) 1-8 and BUBBLEGUM CRASH 1-3.
-
- MADOX-01 is a parody of mecha films, in which a young lad gets
- trapped inside a big metal suit. The army wants the suit back, and the
- hero just wants to keep his date. Only funny after you've seen too much
- other anime, IMHO.
-
- RIDING BEAN, a contemporary crime story about a crook-with-a-heart-
- of-tarnished-gold, well executed with an engaging, twisty plot and fast
- action sequences.
-
- URUSEI YATSURA (see above) Available over the course of three years.
-
- VAMPIRE PRINCESS MIYU (see above)
-
- Subtitled from US Renditions:
-
- APPLESEED: (see above).
- BLACK MAGIC M-66: (see above)
-
- DANGIAOH: Three cute girls and a guy pilot giant convertible
- robots to save the world. (Only part 1 of 3 available.)
-
- GUNBUSTER: Cute girls in convertible giant robots save the universe
- from evil invaders. Sort of wobbles between comedy (it starts as a parody,
- with robots doing pushups, etc.) and drama (coach falls ill, time-dilated
- pilots lose all their friends & family.) The ultimate Zero-G jiggle anime.
- In 3 volumes (6 episodes, 2 per.)
-
- (Coming soon: Macross II, Guyver)
-
- Subtitled from US Manga Corp:
-
- DOMINION (see above), part 1 out, 2-4 planned for 1992.
- PROJECT A-Ko (see above)
- GALL FORCE I (see above) not yet released.
- HUMANOID
-
- Dubbed in English from Streamline:
-
- AKIRA (see above.)
- ZILLION (multiple episodes) Laser Tag Academy goes Japanese.
- NADIA (see above) First 13 episodes planned.
- ROBOT CARNIVAL
- VAMPIRE HUNTER D
- LENSMAN
- TWILIGHT OF THE COCKROACHES (Also available subbed on LD)
- (Castle Cagliostro, Hokuto no Ken, Lensman series are planned for
- home video release.)
-
- (Streamline also released dubbed, LUPIN III: Castle Cagliostro with
- subtitles, and Hukoto no Ken dubbed, thru theaters, but not on home
- video at least not yet. )
-
- In addition, RoboTech and StarBlazers are found in many video stores,
- as are the FHE Just-for-Kids English (heavily edited) versions of popular
- anime that have had their names changed so that:...
-
- Macross '84: Do You Remember Love becomes ATTACK OF THE BIONOIDS (US)...
- or SUPER-DIMENSIONAL FORTRESS MACROSS
- (Aust)
- Locke the Superman becomes LOCKE THE SUPERPOWER
- Windaria becomes ONCE UPON A TIME
- Dagger of Kamui becomes REVENGE OF THE NINJA WARRIOR
- Famous Detective Holmes becomes SHERLOCK HOUND
- Captain Harlock becomes VENGEANCE OF THE SPACE PIRATE
- Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind becomes WARRIORS OF THE WIND
-
- ... and others I've forgotten. Most folks will tell you the editing
- makes these worthless. (Or maybe they don't find them so much fun
- when they can understand the plot? :)
-
- If you want more on recommendation, you might pull the copies of
- electronic anime "magazines" like "Anime Stuff" (from the UCSD FTP
- server (128.54.16.3) anime/anime.stuff/AS_issues) or Electronic
- Animation Velocity (EAV) from the ix1.cc.utexas.edu FTP server
- (128.83.1.21) and see what they said about some programs.
-
- Also, you can find several publications on anime at most comic book
- shops: Animag, Protoculture Addicts, and Animenominious (I refuse to
- try to pronounce the latter :) If your comic shop doesn't carry
- these, demand they do! (Seriously, it's worth asking about - many
- shops don't carry extra copies of low-volume stuff, but can get it for
- you if you want.)
-
- You can find many comic books in the US translated from the Japanese
- Manga that either spawned the anime or vice versav. Current stuff
- includes: Appleseed, Dirty Pair (a US-drawn version), Sazan 3x3 Eyes,
- Silent Moebius, Midnight Eye Goku. Older titles that might be in back
- issues include Nausicaa, Lum & Firetripper.
-
-
- What you want to see will depend on you tastes:
-
- Fantasy: Nausicaa, Laputa, Windaria, Nadia, Angel's Egg.
- Sword & Sorcery: Yotoden, Yoma, Dagger of Kamui, Lodoss War,
- RG Veda, Wizardry, Emblem of Gude, Madara.
- SciFi: Macross, Bubblegum Crisis, Gundam,
- Crusher Joe, Megazone 23, Harlock,

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- o LEGALITY OF COPYING ANIME / ANIME SCRIPTS / ANIME GIF FILES
-
- By virtue of trade agreements between the US and Japan, it is illegal
- in the US to distribute copies of anime and anime-related material without
- having permission from the copyright holder, regardless of whether or not any
- fee is charged. This includes all anime features, official or fan-generated
- scripts for these features and illustrations featuring the likenesses of the
- characters appearing in these features (as in GIF files).
-
- Copyrights are intended to make sure that the author of the work receives
- appropriate compensation for his/her job. Some people consider the copying of
- anime a morally corrupt practice, as the author of the work is not being
- paid. There have been several counter-arguments to this by anime fans,
- such as:
-
- - It is unlikely that the Japanese companies will sue the fan, as this
- practice creates a demand for other anime-related products, which increases
- their sales.
-
- - The fan is against profiting from this activity, and in some cases even
- boycotts and denounces any people who are doing it for profit.
-
- - These features are far too expensive/hard-to-find for the fan to acquire
- them by other means.
-
- Regardless of any moral or economical justifications, the fact is that copying
- of anime features is illegal under US law. If the fan resorts to this method
- to obtain anime material, he/she should be aware of this.

-
- Remember, this is a fan effort and not a commercial venture, so PLEASE don't
- ask her for a copy of everything she's got. Also, her scripts may not be as

-
- A crude guide to using FTP:
-
- Unix Command: ftp <site name>
- Login: anonymous
- Password: login@machine_name
-
- Let's say that geeker@pac.man.edu wants to get the latest and greatest
- Ranma-chan GIF (/anime/hentai/r-chan1.gif) from happosai.com.
- - At the Unix prompt, geeker types "ftp happosai.com".
- - At the "login:" prompt, he types "anonymous".
- - At the "Password:" prompt, he types "geeker@pac.man.edu". He's now logged
- at happosai.com.
- - geeker now uses cd(1) and ls(1) just like in Unix to find whatever he's after.
-
- If geeker want to get the Ranma-chan GIF, he must do the following:
- - He uses cd(1) to go to /anime/hentai. Once there, he uses ls(1) to make sure
- that r-chan1.gif is actually there.
- - GIF files are binary, so geeker sets the file transfer type to binary by
- typing "binary".
- - geeker types "get <filename>", where <filename> is the name of the file he
- wants to copy. In our case, he would type "get r-chan1.gif" to get the file.
- Note that no wildcards are allowed.
- - Several other ftp commands to know:
- "?" - lists the commands available
- "quit" - exits the program
- "ascii" - sets file transfer mode to ascii
- "mget" - allows multiple-file gets, and wildcards
-
- If you need help, or want to learn advanced techniques, DON'T post to
- rec.arts.anime for help. Instead, ask your local system administrator / CCON
- / Unix witch doctor for help. That's what they're paid for.
